What do I need to know about formaldehyde ?
Formaldehyde is a product used in the animal husbandry and agri-business sectors. It is inexpensive and has the reputation of being effective (with the right temperature, relative humidity and cleanliness conditions) as a gaseous or liquid disinfectant for buildings and products (disinfection of hatching eggs, for example).
Formaldehyde’s effectiveness and price have long outweighed its risks (inflammation, explosion, irritation of eyes and mucous membranes, vapour toxicity) and its consequences in terms of handling, storage and protection for the personnel.
Since June 2004, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has recognised that formaldehyde causes nasopharyngeal cancer. With the French decree of 13 July 2006, formaldehyde is covered, as of 1 January 2007, by the reinforced regulations concerning agents that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction in category 1 or 2.
Employers whose personnel are exposed to this substance are required to :
replace it with a less hazardous process or product;
or control the risk of exposure for handling personnel with personal protective equipment.
